Westport Raises Needed Funds For Bench Memorial For Staples High Teacher

WESTPORT, Conn. -- Community members have established a GoFundMe page for a memorial bench to honor Staples High School English teacher Cody Thomas.

Sixty-eight people have contributed so far to the $2,605 raised since the fund was set up on Jan. 24.

Cody Randall Thomas, a Stamford native and a resident of Fairfield, died Saturday, Jan. 23 of an apparent suicide, according to the Westport News. He was 27. 

He was born in Stamford on Jan. 8, 1989, to Matthew G. Thomas and Anna Colacurcio Thomas. 

He was an English teacher at Staples High School, a musician, poet, writer, mentor and altruistic educator, according to his obituary.

Thomas was a graduate of New York University’s Arthur L. Carter Institute of Journalism, and had a master’s degree in education from the University of Connecticut. 

Before joining the staff at Staples High School, he was a writer for the Stamford Advocate and editor of the rock journal Revolver. 

As co-adviser with the Staples High School newspaper, Inklings, he helped bring students to the Columbia Scholastic Press Association Convention, where they received a gold medal award. 

His love of music led him to study music at NYU and play in many local bands after graduation.

He also was an instructor for the Connecticut Writing Project at Fairfield University.
