Westport Club Bends Arms to Break Record

You can help Staples High School enter the Guinness Book of World Records. The Service League of Boys, a parent-son community service club co-founded by junior David Kalb and his mom Suzanne, is looking to break the world record for simultaneous arm wrestling on Friday afternoon, and you're invited.

The current record for the most people arm wrestling at the same time is 206, set in 2008 in England. Although SLOBs — as the club is affectionately known — is looking to beat that record, the battle of arms is mostly a fundraiser.

"We have an annual event called Service Sunday in which we do construction, landscaping and painting jobs for the Department of Human Services and other organizations," said Suzanne. "Every dime raised will go toward buying supplies needed for the event on May 1."

During Service Sunday, SLOBs asks several needy Westport organizations to submit a wish list of projects that need to be completed. From there, Suzanne said contractors are called in to determine the feasibility of the projects. But members of SLOBs carry out the work. This year, Suzanne said SLOBs is helping Homes With Hope, Project Return, ABC House and the Westport Department of Human Services.

"Service Sunday is a key event for us. I know a lot of kids go on trips with Builders Beyond Borders to help the needy, but I don't think many people understand there are people right here in Westport that are in need," Suzanne said. "There are neighbors you see around town but don't know about their quality of life. We've seen a glimpse of that, and I'm really glad we can do something to help them."

The cost to participate in the arm wrestling challenge is $5. The group has a fundraising goal of $10,000. The event is taking place in the Staples cafeteria from 2:30 to 3 p.m. For more information, contact Suzanne at .
