WESTPORT, Conn. Gourmet cook, certified scuba diver and musician: Adam Rosen, the future principal of Westports Bedford Middle School, is all of these, and more.
Rosen, assistant principal at East Ridge Middle School in Ridgefield, will succeed Melissa Kay, who is retiring at the end of this school year. Rosen was introduced by Westport Superintendent Elliott Landon during Monday nights Board of Education meeting.
He is a cellist a master origamist, a vegetable gardener, international traveler, and has advanced certification in scuba diving, Landon said. Hes a gourmet cook, having competed in New York City's Summer Streets cooking challenge, and after a four-year cello scholarship, was principal cellist with the Mary Washington Symphony.
Rosen, who holds a doctorate in education, has an equally impressive professional track record, Landon said. He started his career as a research associate for the U.S. Geological Survey. He also worked as a research associate at the National Museum of Natural History and Marine Systems Laboratory at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C.
Before becoming assistant principal at East Ridge five years ago, Rosen worked as a science teacher at the school for eight years, and was the schools science department chairman. Before that, he was a master science teacher at Choate Rosemary Hall, a private school in Wallingford, Landon said.
Some of Rosens other career highlights include serving on the state Department of Education's Science Advisory Panel and being a member of the Tri-State Consortium Assistant Principal Study Group.
I think Bedford is extremely fortunate to have such a talented individual come and lead the school," board Chairman Don ODay said. "I think well have Dr. Rosen around for a longtime."
Rosen has a bachelors degree in biology from the University of Mary Washington, a master of arts from SUNY-Stony Brook and a doctorate of education from Southern Connecticut State University. He will be the second principal at Bedford in as many years. Kay, who was appointed principal in May 2010, is reportedly moving to Rome to work at a private American school.
Rosen said hes absolutely thrilled to join the team at Bedford and is looking forward to working in Westport.
This is a district that values arts and education; that asks deep, challenging questions of kids and of life, and this is an incredible community, Rosen said at the meeting. This is a wonderful opportunity for me.
