WESTON, Conn. -- The Weston Republican Town Committee has awarded its intern James Joyce with the $500 Sandra Wiehl Memorial Fund scholarship.

James is a sophomore at Weston High School. The reward is for his efforts on behalf of the 2015 Weston Republican municipal elections.

James is the son of educators, Anne and Kevin Joyce. His mother works in the Fairfield public schools and his father at Weston High School.

The scholarship was presented at a Meet the Candidates event Sunday, Oct. 18.

State legislators, local candidates and officials and others attended.

In his thank you speech, James called receiving he scholarship a "great honor.”

An intern since July, James said he volunteers because of his "beliefs in traditional values, fiscal responsibility, and community service."

"This award provides me with even more motivation to continue in the field of public service.”

The Sandra Wiehl Memorial Fund was established with a gift from the Wiehl family to the Weston Republican Town Committee for the benefit of young men and women of Weston who aspire to political experience.
