Weston Middle School Music Groups Win Competition

The town of Weston distinguished itself musically on Friday when a number of Middle School music groups competed in and won events in the Music in the Parks Festival in Agawam, Mass.

"It's amazing how well they did," said Liz Morris, the Middle School curriculum instructional leader. "Every group that participated got first place in their division and won for best overall group."

Morris didn't know how many schools were competing, but said it was a regional competition that involved schools from Connecticut, Massachusetts and other states.

Instrumental and vocal groups competed, including the Middle School Jazz Ensembles, the Chamber Orchestra and Chamber Singers. Each of the groups performed three selections before a panel of judges.

The Jazz Ensemble directed by Jeff Holmes and the Chamber Orchestra directed by Meghan Smart took first place in their divisions and best overall Junior High Middle School Jazz Band and Chamber Orchestra. The Chamber Singers directed by Morris won the same honors.

Sam Ditkoff received the outstanding soloist award for his guitar solo with the Jazz Band.

The awards were given out at the end of the day at Six Flags New England Amusement Park where the students enjoyed an evening of fun after their successful performances.

"The success thay have shown is testament to the Music Department and the strength of the program in Weston and the support of the community," Morris said.
