John Reed will serve as interim Weston school superintendent, starting Feb. 5. Reed previously served as Westons interim superintendent from August 2007 to April 2008. Current Superintendent Jerry Belair announced his resignation last month to become superintendent in Waterford, which is closer to his home.
Reed will begin his duties before Belair's departure to assure a smooth transition in leadership. He will serve until the school board appoints a permanent superintendent.
Reed served as schools superintendent in Newtown from 1982 to 2002, as interim assistant superintendent in Darien in 2005 and as interim assistant superintendent in Middletown from 2005 to 2006.
Before his career in Connecticut, Reed served as superintendent of the Margate City School District in New Jersey for eight years, as principal of Bala-Cynwyd Junior High School in Lower Merion, Pa., and as assistant principal at Radnor Junior High School in Radnor, Pa. He also taught social studies at Rittenhouse Junior High School in Norristown, Pa.
Reed holds a bachelors degree in secondary education social studies from West Chester State College in Pennsylvania and masters and doctorates in education from Temple University. He received many awards and honors throughout his career and has served in many professional and civic organizations. He currently serves as chairman of the Fairfield Hills Authority in Newtown.
Philip Schaefer, chairman of the Weston Board of Education and the Weston superintendent search committee, said: "We are extremely pleased to have Dr. Reed serve as Weston's Interim Superintendent during this critical period. His past experience in Weston and his extensive background will be an invaluable asset as the Board continues its search for a permanent Superintendent to succeed Jerry Belair."
Reed resides in Newtown. He is married and has two children and three granddaughters.
