Veggies to Popp Up at Staples

Easton's youngest wanna-be farmers will get a chance to test their green thumbs soon, thanks to Patti and Allan Popp of Sport Hill Farm.

The town recently accepted the Popp's proposal to use town land to educate Samuel Staples Elementary School students on the ins and outs of farming. Patti will visit the school today to help students plant pumpkin seeds that, hopefully, will grow by the fall. The soil has been tilled to get it ready for planting, but she said it will be a "trial year," and the two plots might not yet be in condition to take on the seed.

"Either way, whether the pumpkins grow or not, it will be a learning experience," said Patti, who added that she wants to give all the children who are interested in farming a chance to get involved. There are kids in almost every grade who said they wanted to learn about farming, according to Popp. "It sounds like everyone's on board, with the exception of a few."

The Popps have been running a popular farm camp at the Unquowa School in Fairfield for four years, so a program at Staples was not much of a stretch, she said.
