Mitchell will be the featured speaker for the anniversary breakfast, which will be held at 7:45 a.m. May 17 at Bridgeport Holiday Inn.

From there, he’ll head to Dunbar School to take part in a reading rally, where every student will receive a copy of his book, “The Magician’s Hat.”

A recent graduate of the University of Georgia, Mitchell noticed his academic skills didn’t quite match up to his stellar moves on the field.

The footballer decided to read more — a hobby that led to his writing the children’s book and creating his own nonprofit, Read with Malcolm, which promotes the benefits of reading and book ownership.

Mitchell’s story is a good fit for the School Volunteers Association. The organization was started in 1964 at Waltersville School as a project of the Junior League of Eastern Fairfield County.

In 1966 the American Association of University Women assumed leadership. The program was incorporation 1967 and rapidly expanded throughout the city’s schools.

Today, approximately 1,000 adults from the greater Bridgeport area join as volunteers for the association’s annual Read Aloud Day in October and the ongoing reading enrichment, tutoring and mentoring programs.

Each year, the organization donates 16,000 books to classrooms and student home libraries to promote the value and enjoyment of reading.
