For additional support in study skills, time management, organization and executive functioning, Joel Barlow High School is once again hosting the popular S4 Successful Study Skills 4 Students workshops. Workshops for middle school students will be at the Redding Community Center. Last summer's workshops were completely sold out.
Based on school, parent and, most importantly, student feedback, this summer's high school workshops have been expanded to provide more in-depth instruction in key areas such as time-management, organization and test preparation.
Students will actively learn how to apply the taught tools, systems and techniques to their class work, homework and throughout their entire current academic curriculum.
The goal of the S4 workshop is to equip students with the skills they need to be successful learners and students. With an accessible, logical and easy-to-implement system, S4 offers a template for students' success both in and outside of school. Key tools and skills of the program include: goal setting and time management, notetaking methods, the importance of asking questions, active reading strategies, summarizing to learn, test preparation strategies and more.
Limited class size ensures participation in specific interactive activities designed to reinforce the skills taught and engage even the most reluctant student.
At Joel Barlow High School, all sessions run from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Session one is from June 27 to July 1, Session 2 is from July 5 to July 11 and Session 3 is from Aug. 22 to Aug. 26. The registration fee for the Barlow workshops is $395.
There will be two sessions for middle school students at the Redding Community Center. Each session will be from Aug. 23 to Aug. 25. For fifth- and sixth-graders, it will be from 1 to 2:30 p.m., and for seventh- and eighth-graders, it will be from 3 to 4:30 p.m. The registration fee is $300.
S4 will supply all materials, including a take-home folder, which includes the entire outline of the workshop and other material for parental support.
