The forward-facing electronic skateboard-type are popular — but dangerous, the Connecticut State Colleges and Universities system said in issuing the ban this week.

"Due to safety concerns about fire and rider safety, hoverboards shall not be allowed to be either charged, operated or stored on CSCU campuses," the statement said.

The CSCU system includes four state universities (but not the University of Connecticut); 12 community colleges; and Charter Oak State College, including these in Fairfield County:

  • Housatonic Community College in Bridgeport
  • Naugatuck Valley Community College, with a campus in Danbury
  • Norwalk Community College in Norwalk
  • Western Connecticut State University in Danbury

This prohibition is consistent with the CSCU Student Code of Conduct that prohibits “behavior or activity which endangers the health, safety or well-being of others,” the statement said.

The ban was issued due to the concern about fire safety and collisions. Due to the abundance of reported safety issues with the devices, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is investigating the safety of hoverboards, CSCU said.

Moreover, the National Association of Fire Marshals has also issued a warning regarding fire safety due to spontaneous fires potentially linked to the battery that powers the board.

"Given the warnings and concerns of these organizations, CSCU has issued this prohibition," the statement said.

The system said the prohibition is consistent with other colleges and universities across the country.

Metro-North also banned hoverboards this week from all of its trains and platforms. The ban by the Metropolitan Transportation Agency extends to all trains, buses and stations for Metro-North, the New York City Subways, New York City Buses, Long Island Rail Road and Staten Island Railway as well as Access-A-Ride.
