Staples Seniors Make National Merit Semifinals

WESTPORT, Conn. – A group of 18 Staples High School seniors were named semifinalists in the 58th annual National Merit Scholarship program, the schools superintendent’s office announced Wednesday.

The semifinalists are Clayton Andrews, Andrew Bowles, Robert DeLuca, Judy Feng, Edmund Hardy, Michael Holtz, Jason Hoving, Matthew Levantin, Blythe Lewis, Leo McElroy, Michael Menz, Caitlyn Rand, Douglas Russ, Marcus Russi, Jordan Shenhar, Felton Weller, Alec Wrubel, Tiffany Yang.

These students are among 16,000 semifinalists nationwide who will compete for 8,300 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $32 million.

“Because I spend so many hours each week with our students, I know how talented and hard-working they are,” Staples High School Principal John Dodig said in a press release. “Some of the public, however, needs a metric to judge just how well-prepared are students are. The National Merit Scholarship Program is such a metric.

“Having 18 National Merit Semifinalists is a visible sign that we have an outstanding student body," he added. "This many students in one class reaching this level of success lets the world know how serious our students are about becoming well-educated.”
