WESTPORT, Conn. -- Westport's Staples Players student acting group is opening its new season Friday with "Thoroughly Modern Millie," a family-friendly musical comedy.

The show opens at 7:30 p.m. on the Main Stage Theatre at Staples High School. Performances are also scheduled for Saturday at 7:30 p.m.; Sunday at 2 p.m.; Nov. 22 at 7:30 p.m.; and Nov. 23 at 2 and 7:30 p.m.

Maddy Rozynek, who is one of the two seniors double cast in the title role of Millie, said she was excited to perform in the show.

“I think audiences will love 'Thoroughly Modern Millie' not only for its amazing songs, choreography, set design, and costumes, but also because of the immense amount of energy and enthusiasm every cast member brings to the stage as they perform," Rozynek said in a statement. "The cast is super excited about performing this show.”

Senior Will Haskell, who is the president of Staples Players and cast as Ching Ho, echoed Rozynek's enthusiasm.

"I think audience members are going to love the tap dancing in this show," Haskell said in the release. "So many cast members who had never tapped before have been working very hard, and the group tap numbers look amazing.”

Cast and crew members are dedicating this year's season in memory of Staples Players founder Craig Matheson, who died earlier this year, the group announced.

“Not only was Craig Matheson the founder of Players, but he continued to be a sort of grandfather of sorts to the program,"  Players Director David Roth said in a statement. "The students continued to know him and look forward to speaking to him after shows , and he never missed a production.

"He was always actively supporting Players, whether it was talking up shows with the Wise Men, writing touching congratulatory notes and, most memorably, doling out his big, beaming smiles and great hugs to all of the kids," Roth continued. "He was truly a special man and affected so many young lives. We are happy to be able to pay tribute to him this season."

A dedication ceremony will be held after the Nov. 23 matinee performance.

Show tickets are $10 for students and $15 for adults and can be purchased online. Tickets will also be available at the door, as available, 30 minutes before the show. Only cash or checks are accepted at the door.
