School Bells Will Ring Thursday in Westport

WESTPORT, Conn. – After being postponed, twice, because of Hurricane Irene, Westport Public Schools will open Thursday, Superintendent Elliott Landon confirmed.

The first day of school was originally set for Tuesday but was pushed back a day Sunday after the storm hit. The start date was again pushed back Tuesday after Westport Fire Chief and Emergency Management Director Andrew Kingsbury ordered the schools remain closed because of downed trees and power lines.

In a message on the district’s website, Landon urged parents to accompany children to and from their bus stops and to supervise them before they get on in the morning and off in the afternoon.

“There will be work crews continuing their efforts throughout the day and caution should be exercised when approaching them,” Landon said in the message. “Parents and students should always assume that downed wires are energized.”

Westport First Selectman Gordon Joseloff, in a CodeRED emergency telephone message sent Wednesday evening, advised people who encounter wires to stay at least 10 feet away.

Parents who do not feel comfortable having their child walk to or stand at an assigned bus stop will be permitted to use any other bus stop on the same route, Landon said. Parents also may choose not to send their children to school.
