The concert at Bedford Middle School in Westport is part of Westport Community Band’s 19th annual “Play with the Community Band” program and marks the culmination of a six-week project for these band students.

This year, Ridgefield Academy has nine students participating: Margaret Toft on percussion; Benton Perry, clarinet; Simone Moales, clarinet; Ranease Brown, saxophone, Ella Norwitt, saxophone; Pete Howell, baritone horn; Eduardo Leff Godden, clarinet; Lily Carey, trumpet and Stella Dubin, trumpet.

Music teacher and band director Jamie Kaye has spearheaded the school’s involvement.

“We've had students in previous years participate in the program and it's always been a positive experience for them," Kaye said. "Students get a chance to learn challenging music and be a part of a full size concert band.”

Kaye is a classically trained clarinetist. He has performed with the Westport Community Band before and he will be performing in the concert Friday.

Six weeks ago, the students received the music they will play in the concert. They had six, half-hour rehearsals. In addition, many of the students practiced during their recess periods.

For the concert, the sixth-graders will perform both by themselves and alongside the adults.
