WESTPORT, Conn. Westports Board of Education has a new member. Brett Aronow, a former co-president of the Westport Parent-Teacher Association Council, was unanimously elected by members of the board Monday night to fill the vacancy created in August when former Chairman Don ODay resigned .
Aronowa mother of threemay be a new face on the board, but as a past co-president of the PTA Council, shes no stranger to board meetings.
Shes been sitting in these meetings for years anyway, so why not come up here and have a drink of water, Jim Marpe, acting chair, joked, prompting laughter from the audience.
Aronow was one of seven applicants vying for the spot, Marpe said. While he said each applicant would have been a wonderful addition to the board, Aronows resume was most impressive. As a parent, shes been actively involved in the schools community since 2001, when she became a classroom volunteer at Greens Farms School.
She started her PTA career in 2007 as co-treasurer of the Greens Farms PTA. A year later, she became a Greens Farms PTA co-president. During the 2009-10 academic year, she served as the communication secretary of the Bedford Middle School PTA and as co-chair of curriculum/events on the PTA Council.
From 2010 to the end of the last academic year, Aronow served as co-president of the PTA Council. Most recently, she was the Past President of the council, an advisory role in which she attended every meeting and wrote summaries of what happened for the entire PTA community.
I know I cant think of anyone whos better prepared to take that seat and to make an immediate contribution here, Marpe said.
Board Secretary Elaine Whitney, who has known Aronow since her elementary PTA days, agreed, saying Aronow will be able to hit the ground running.
She has a very broad understanding of the school system, Whitney said. Most importantly, I think Brett is incredibly dedicated to our students, and shes demonstrated that for many years.
Aronow was also lauded for her academic background. She obtained her undergraduate degree in economics from Dartmouth College and a masters in business administration from Stanford. She is also active in a number of community organizations, including the Westport Youth Commission, Westport Positive Youth Development, the Fairfield County Alliance to Prevent Substance Abuse and more.
"I'm very proud to be appointed to this position and proud to able to serve my community," said Aronow, who will serve on the board until next board election in 2013.
