DANBURY, Conn. -- The Newtown first selectman and school superintendent will speak at the undergraduate commencement exercises Sunday at Western Connecticut State University on the Westside Campus.

First Selectman Patricia Llodra and Janet Robinson, superintendent of schools, have received nationwide praise for their handling of the tragedy in December at Sandy Hook Elementary School after the massacre of 20 students and six educators.

The commencement exercises will be held in the in the Westside Athletic Stadium on the Westside Campus, 43 Lake Ave. Ext.

The procession of graduates will begin promptly at 10 a.m., leaving from the Feldman Arena in the O'Neill Convocation Center and heading to the stadium. The commencement will begin at 10:30 a.m. Family, friends and alumni are invited to attend. The ceremony will conclude at approximately 12:30 p.m.

Air-conditioned shuttles to the ceremony will be offered from the Midtown campus to ease parking and traffic concerns.

The WestConn ceremony will recognize undergraduates who had or will have degrees conferred last January, this month or in August.

The ceremony will take place rain or shine. However, in the event of severe weather (thunder, lightning or high winds) the president will confer all degrees and end the ceremony. Guests will be directed to the O'Neill Center until the severe weather has abated.

To preserve the dignity of the ceremony and the safety of those in attendance, air horns, beach balls and other inflatable items are prohibited and will be confiscated by the campus police.

Alcoholic beverages are not allowed at the ceremony.

Commencement is outdoors and those attending should wear a hat for sun protection and flat-heeled shoes for walking on the grass.
