Letter: School Board Will Be Lucky to Have Gordon

WESTPORT, Conn. – The following letter was submitted by Westport resident Don O’Day, Democrat chairman of the Board of Education.

Every two years Westporters select individuals to serve on the Board of Education; some run for the first time while others seek re-election.  We know these candidates; they are our neighbors and friends.  Because we know them, we understand their positions, experience and character. That is very important because, unlike the stock market, a candidate's past performance really is a strong predictor of future performance.

This election season, Westport is fortunate to have a candidate running for the Board of Education with an impressive resume of personal accomplishment that includes work on education policy for the Clinton Administration.  That candidate is Michael Gordon and I strongly support Michael’s effort to join me on the Board of Education.

Since one of the Board of Education’s major responsibilities is the establishment of policy for our town’s schools, Michael’s experience in education policy setting at the national level is very relevant.  That alone would be a good reason to consider Michael but it is not the only reason to vote for him.  Three other factors are also relevant.  They are:

1)      Michael created and built his own nationally known public relation business.  You simply cannot build a business from scratch without knowing how to get the most from scarce dollars while satisfying your customer’s expectations.  Our town needs strong financial acumen and Michael brings that to the table.

2)      Related to #1, Michael’s business experience is public relations.  I would be the first to admit that while our schools richly deserve the reputation for being great, we sometimes miss the boat in public relations.  With Michael, we get a nationally recognized expert.

3)       This is my favorite one: As I have come to know him, I have found that Michael begins many of his insightful questions and comments with “as a Dad, my expectation is...”  While Michael’s resume is ideal for our BOE, his heart is clearly in the right place.  With Michael, it’s all about the kids.

Michael will bring a strong voice and a fresh perspective to the BOE.  I ask that you join me in voting for him on Nov. 8.
