WESTPORT, Conn. The following letter was submitted by Westport resident Anne Hardy, a past president of the Staples High School Parent Teacher Association.
To the Editor:
I am writing to support Michael Gordon as a candidate for Westport's Board of Education. At the League of Women Voters' Board of Education debate, it was clear to me that Michael is a big-picture thinker with an overarching desire to enhance each student's educational experience in Westport.
I admire his belief that each child deserves to realize his or her full potential, and I feel that in his service on the Board of Education, he will keep that ideal at the forefront. His discipline as a private business owner, his public experience at the national level in education policy and at the local level in child advocacy means he will bring to the table important perspectives as we undertake, as a town, to answer the question, "What will education in Westport look like in the years to come?" via Westport Education 2025.
The opportunity this new Board of Education will have to understand and influence this exciting discussion cannot be understated. I feel that Michael Gordon will contribute actively to that conversation on the Board of Education looking at the challenges we face today as dynamic opportunities to continue to refine and implement best practices in Westport's schools.
As a parent, Michael is supportive of the model that students, teachers, parents and the community commit to each other in the pursuit of high quality education at every level and I think he has the right kind of focus and background for the job.
As a graduate of the Westport schools, a former Staples High School PTA president and a parent to two sons who have had, and continue to have, excellent educational opportunities here in Westport, I am pleased to support Michael Gordon for the Board of Education and I hope you will join me in voting for him on Nov. 8.
