Hurricane Sandy Shuts Schools In Weston, Easton & Redding

WESTON, Conn. – Weston public schools are canceled Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and the Senior Center will be closed Monday. Weston Town Hall and the library will be open Monday morning but will probably close by noon with town buildings and services closed Tuesday.

Easton and Redding public schools will also be closed Monday and Tuesday. A decision will be made later on Wednesday.

“We don’t know when it’s going to hit, but we’ll get force winds by midnight,” Sgt. Mike Ferullo, director of emergency management,  said in a phone call late Sunday afternoon, projecting the arrival of Hurricane Sandy.

“It’s not your typical hurricane, we know it’s more dangerous,” he said. “It has hybrid winds that won’t die out and will maintain full strength when it’s in the area. Hurricane Irene was 12 hours but this will be 36.”

Weston's town shelter has not been opened yet but will opened when necessary, Ferullo said. It will be located at the high school instead of the middle school because the high school has individual showers and a better generator system, he said.

The Weston police are ready to handle severe storm conditions, but Ferullo said power outages may hinder service. “If power goes out we won’t be able to respond due to the intensity of the storm,” he said.
