HCC Staff Helps Fight Hunger With Food Bank In Fairfield

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- A Fairfield food pantry's shelves have 100 cans of fruit given by staff and faculty at Housatonic Community College.

In an effort to fight hunger, members of the Congress of Connecticut Community Colleges (4Cs) at Housatonic Community College have donated more than 200 jars and cans of fruit and jelly this year to Operation Hope's food pantry.

The drive was organized by HCC members of theC Congress of Connecticut Community Colleges (4Cs), the union that represents the college.

The member brought their donations to the 4Cs Dec. 15 luncheon. The cans were then given to Operation Hope, the social service agency in Fairfield that runs the food pantry, community kitchen, and homeless shelter.

The college has a long history of supporting families in need, said Lynne Langella of Branford, HCC 4Cs chapter co-chair and Coordinator of Disability Support Services.

The food collection started this past spring when 100 jars of jelly and fruit were brought to an HCC end-of-the-year luncheon.

“During food drives with children in mind, people always think of peanut butter,” Langella said. “but most people forget the jelly. Operation Hope asked us for jelly.”

In April Langella met with Operation Hope Executive Director and Stratford resident Carla Miklos, whose parents taught at HCC, for the initiative.

One person who is impressed with the HCC members’ response to the food drive is 4Cs President Bryan Bonina of Bristol. “Hats off to 4Cs members at Housatonic for going out of their way to help the needy in the community,” he said.

“Their generosity is an example of our members’ commitment to the students and the communities they serve.”
