Graffiti Strikes Westport School, Beach

Westport's Staples High School and Compo Beach have been targets of graffiti, and police are itching to find the vandals responsible.

An officer patrolling the high school found "large, white letters" spray-painted on the pavement outside the building at about 2:20 a.m. Thursday, according to Capt. Sam Arciola. As the officer continued to check the school, he saw a young male, about 5 feet tall, dressed all in black, running from the building.

The officer chased the suspect, and additional officers were called in to set up a perimeter. A K-9 unit from Norwalk was called in to assist in the search, but police were unable to find the suspect.

In addition to the spray-painted letters the patrolling officer had initially come across, police found 10 doors and seven parking spots had been spray-painted.

Later Thursday morning, police received a call about a swastika painted on a guard building at Compo Beach. Arciola said the Parks and Recreation Department was working to remove the vandalism.
