STAMFORD, Conn. – It's not just for commuters anymore: The first-ever residence hall at the University of Connecticut in Stamford is opening on Wednesday, marking the first student housing at that campus and the only one of its kind at a UConn regional campus.

Tours will also be given Wednesday at the new building, which UConn is leasing through a public-private partnership to ensure affordable rent for the nearly 300 students who will live there. They start moving in on Aug. 26.

The six-story building, located at at 900 Washington Blvd., is two blocks south of UConn Stamford and halfway between the campus and the Stamford Transportation Center.

The growing UConn Stamford campus is home to about 1,400 full- and part-time students.

The options in the 116 units range from studio apartments to one- and two-bedroom apartments. There is a hall director and resident assistants on-site to offer support to students.

Each apartment is furnished with bedroom, living room and kitchen furniture, including a stove, microwave, dishwasher, refrigerator and a washer and dryer.

There is study space on each floor as well as a game room and larger recreation room on the second floor.

Here are the apartment costs for full-time students:

  • Standard Shared Bedroom: $4,975 per semester
  • Premium Shared Bedroom: $5,975  per semester
  • Penthouse Shared Bedroom Single Bedroom: $6,240 per semester
  • Oversized Penthouse Shared Bedroom: $6,475 per semester

By comparison, the cost of a one-bedroom Stamford apartment averages $1,900 per month and the average cost of a two-bedroom apartment is $2,700 per month, which is not affordable for most students, UConn said.

The Stamford Campus of the University of Connecticut was founded in 1951, to provide education for GIs returning from the Korean War.

The campus offers four-year undergraduate degrees in 15 majors, including Computer Science, Digital Media and Design, Economics, English, Human Development and Family Studies, History, Political Science, and Psychology, and more.

At the graduate level, the campus offers the part-time Master of Business Administration, and the Master of Science in Financial Risk Management, and the Master of Business Analytics and Project Management degrees.

Gov. Dannel Malloy, UConn President Susan Herbst, UConn Board of Trustees Chairman Larry McHugh, Stamford Mayor David Martin, UConn Stamford students and many state and local officials will attend the opening on Wednesday.

UConn-Stamford joins the University of Bridgeport, Sacred Heart University, Fairfield University and Western Connecticut State University in offering university housing to students in Fairfield County.
