Egan O'Brien might friend one or two of his teachers when he graduates from Joel Barlow High School in June. "A lot of people friend their teachers after they graduate," said Emily D'Alessandro, also a senior at Joel Barlow.
A student at Barlow recently posted inappropriate comments as his status on Facebook. D'Alessandro said the comments were about teachers. Somehow, the Barlow network saw them, and the student was disciplined.
"It's very clear to the staff that we discourage and recommend they do not accept friendships with students," said Thomas McMorran, principal at Joel Barlow.
Some of the younger teachers are "digital natives," said McMorran, and are comfortable interacting with the world through social media. Some were giving homework assignments through social networking sites, which is no longer allowed. Teachers and students can communicate outside of school through email, said McMorran.
