Susan Kaplan was appointed principal at Helen Keller Middle School by the Easton Board of Education on Thursday.
Superintendent Michael Cicchetti stated in a letter to residents of Easton and Redding:
"As you know, Mrs. Kaplan has been the assistant principal at Helen Keller Middle School since 2008. Prior to that, she taught third grade from 1999 to 2003 and fifth grade science from 2003 to 2008 at Samuel Staples Elementary School. Throughout her career in the Easton School District, Susan has been an active participant in school-based and tri-district committees, including math, science, health, guidance and social studies curriculum committees, the Policy Review Committee, the Tri-State Science Visit Steering Committee, the Tri-district Implementation Team for the PowerSchool Data Management System, Tri-district Technology Committee and the Tri-district Professional Growth and Evaluation Committee. She developed the five-year fiscal plan for introduction of Project Lead the Way at Helen Keller Middle School. Prior to her education career, Susan held various positions at IBM Corp. in the areas of marketing, accounting, asset operations, software security and financial analysis.
Susan received her bachelor of science in health policy, planning and administration and her master's of public administration: human resources from New York University. She also received her master's in science of teaching: elementary education from the State University of New York at New Paltz. She earned her intermediate administrator certification at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield."
Interim principal Lyn Merrill took over last year after longtime principal Joan Parker left because of failing health. Parker died of cancer in November. Kaplan will be Helen Keller Middle School's new principal effective July 1.
