DANBURY, Conn. -- Danbury writer Kristin Wolfe, an adjunct professor of English, is teaching a workshop to help juniors and seniors with the essays for their college applications.

"Amidst a sea of test scores, grades and activity data, the essay is where you really get to demonstrate who you are and what you have to offer," Wolfe said. "Sign up for a six-week workshop to create a compelling narrative for your application portfolio."

The workshop will be held at Rumors European Coffeehouse, 22 Mill Plain Road, Danbury. The cost is $250 per six-week session.

For the college essay, Wolfe gives her students these two tips upfront:

  • Get as specific as you can. Admissions readers go through thousands of essays — so make yourself memorable in that pile.
  • Don't shy away from writing about moments when you weren't at your best.It is often in how we handle hardship or failure that we really prove our abilities.

"Think of movies you like to watch; it's fine for a time to watch our favorite characters running with glee through a field of flowers, so to speak, but it is when we see them push through muck and grime first do we really feel their triumph," she said.

Sessions are as follows:

  • Session 1: Wednesdays, April 5, to May 10, 4:30 to 6 p.m.; or Thursdays, April 6 to May 11, 4:30 to 6 p.m.
  • Session 2: Wednesdays, May 24 to June 28, 4:30 to 6 p.m. or Thursdays, May 25 to June 29, 4:30 to 6 p.m.
  • Session 3: Wednesdays, July 12 to Aug. 16, 4:30 to 6 p.m. or Thursdays, July 13 to Aug. 17, 4:30 to 6 p.m.

The workshop includes the college essay plus essay supplements — and coffee.

Wolfe has worked with hundreds of students on college essays. Her recent students include a number of students accepted to Harvard, Brown, Smith, the University of Chicago, Princeton, Dartmouth, Tulane, the University of Michigan, Syracuse, New York University, Columbia and more.

She is completing her MFA in nonfiction at Columbia University and is an adjunct professor at the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan.
