Cicchetti's Retirement Stuns Schools

School Superintendent Michael Cicchetti's announcement Tuesday that he was stepping down left the Easton, Redding and District 9 communities in shock.

"It was a surprise to me," said Mark Lewis, chairman of the Region 9 Board of Education. "I think it was a surprise to all of us."

Cicchetti has served only 10 months as superintendent, and his retirement is effective at the end of this school year.

Heidi Adair, co-president of the Helen Keller Middle School PTA, said Cicchetti bought a wealth of skills to the district's schools. "I was certainly sad and shocked," she said. "Dr. Cicchetti was really on a good track of getting a strategic plan of getting everything together. I was really liking the energy he brought and the direction he was taking."

Cicchetti has served in Connecticut public schools for 35 years. He could not be reached for comment.
