Bridgeport Rallies To Help Middle Schooler Take Summer Study Trip To Cuba

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. -- Even though it's easier than ever for Americans to travel to Cuba, paying to go is a different matter. A Bridgeport student has been given the chance to visit the Caribbean island nation for a study abroad 11-day trip this summer. The problem is he needs to first raise $3,000.

Jermaine Smith, 14, of Bridgeport, an eighth-grader at Capital Prep Harbor School is asking for help in a GoFundMe to pay for a study abroad trip to Cuba.

The Cuba visit is part of a social justice course 14-year-old Jermaine Smith is taking at Capital Prep Harbor School, where he is in the eighth grade.

Jermaine is asking the public's help to pay for the trip in a GoFundMe.

The journey will include some time in Havana and travel to smaller villages in Cuba, Jermaine told Daily Voice.

"It will give me a chance to compare Hispanic culture to our American culture. Last summer, for English, my friend and I made a video log of a trip to Europe. We plan on doing the same thing in Cuba so (classmates) can see what it's like there," he said.

In addition, he will be required to write a report about his experiences.

"I have been given a life-changing opportunity," the student says in his GoFundMe pitch.

"Although the cost of the trip is very high I believe that with your help I'll be able to acquire the necessary funds for me to attend."
