31 Staples Seniors Earn National Merit Honors

WESTPORT, Conn. – A group of 31 seniors at Westport’s Staples High School have been named Commended Students in the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program in recognition of their academic success, the superintendent’s office announced.

The students are: Megumi Asada, Jacob Baron, Olivia Bicks, Spencer Carr, Lucas Carstens, Alexandra Ciotoli, Anne Cooperstone, Kevin Coughlin, John Dobrich, Jared Eisenberg, Jessica Ellison, Christin Fincher, Reed Geisler, Katherine Hickson, Danielle Honigstein, Garrett Jordan, Claudia Kann, Jeffrey Krieger, Eric Lombardo, Michaela MacDonald, Alec Maki, Jacob Meisel, Alexandra O’Kane, Audrey Reedy, Molly Rubidge, Bryan Schiavone, Mark Schwabacher, Madeline Seidman, Jeremy Sherman, Anita Vohra and Steven Weinstein.

These students are among about 34,000 high school seniors nationwide recognized for their “exceptional academic promise,” the statement said. Their scores on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test ranked in the Top 5 percent of the more than 1.5 million students who took the test.

Each student was awarded a letter of commendation from the school and the National Merit Scholarship Corp.

Last month, 18 Staples seniors were named semifinalists in the program. Those students are among 16,000 semifinalists nationwide who will compete for 8,300 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $32 million.
