WESTPORT, Conn. -- A total of 27 Staples High School seniors were named as Commended Students in the 2014 National Merit Scholarship Program,the school announced.
Principal John Dodig will present a letter of commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corp. to the students "who participate and excel in nearly every activity Staples High School offers."
The students are: Sara Banbury, Deanna Baris, Melissa Beretta, Ryder Chasin, Katherine Cion, Jack Cody, Tristan Forbes, Meghan Fox, Beatrice Gomes, Michelle Gurevich, Cecilia Kiker, Max Liben, Alex Mapley, Tyler Marks, William McDonald, Connor Mitnick, Anais Mitra, Emma Moskovitz, Victoria Nachman, Jessica Pressman, Jake Reiner, Daniel Shapiro, Ariana Sherman, Alec Solder, Carly Steckel, Baxter Stein and Nicholas Stern.
About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Commended Students placed among the top 5 percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2014 competition by taking the 2012 Preliminary SAT.
"Recognizing academically talented students plays a fundamental role in the advancement of educational excellence within our nation," the National Merit Scholarship Corp. said in a statement. "The young people recognized as Commended Students represent some of the best and brightest minds in the country. We sincerely hope this recognition will provide them with additional educational outlets and motivate them in their pursuit of academic achievement."
