The winners are Coleytown Middle School seventh-grader Victoria Cao and eighth-grader Eden Schumer. The contest was sponsored by the University of Connecticut's English Department.
The students were honored in a ceremony at the Jorgensen Auditorium on the UConn campus in Storrs.
Victoria was awarded an honorable mention for her personal memoir on "First Day Jitters," while Eden Schumer won the poetry division for her piece entitled "A Drop in the Ocean."
Both pieces were the product of writing units in the Westport Language Arts curriculum, said teacher Paul Ferrante.
"The girls wrote very personal pieces," Ferrante said, "and were not afraid to share their feelings and talent. There were over 900 entries in the contest, and their success is a reflection of the district's commitment to excellence in writing."
