Hoping to improve comfort, cut energy costs and protect the environment, Mathissen and her husband wanted their new home to consume energy wisely. The couple originally purchased a small home on Easton Road with the plan to renovate efficiently and hire environmentally-conscious contractors.

"We always strive to go green, whether it be recycling or buying energy efficient products," said Mathissen. "So when we were renovating our home, we wanted to hire builders with the right energy-saving background."

After interviewing several different home builders, the Mathissens chose Danziger Homes, a Newtown-based contractor that specializes in building ENERGY STAR-rated homes. "Danziger designed our house to meet the energy-star-rating," said Mathissen. "It's great because we are very concerned about saving as much water as possible, making heating and cooling economically friendly and making sure we aren't burning oil or fuel."

Inside the home, Danziger installed fireplaces with vents to prevent hot air from escaping, and cold air from entering the house. They also installed a geothermal heating and cooling system, which keeps the home at a constant temperature by pumping heat from the ground.

"You always have the same, constant temperature throughout the house, and the air is usually moist and never very dry," said Mathissen. "Most builders build for aesthetic reasons, not really thinking of conservation or energy efficiency, so we lucked out."

104 Easton Road, priced at $2,675,000 by Berkshire Hathaway, includes seven bedrooms, eight bathrooms and over 8,000 sq. ft of living space. In addition to reducing their carbon footprint, the Mathissen's have saved money on their monthly energy bill, allowing them to live more comfortably.

"The house speaks for itself and financially it's a win-win situation," said Mathissen. "It's very comfortable, luxurious and it doesn't cost a lot out of pocket."
