State Police troopers were called just after 10:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 5, with reports of a crash on the westbound Southern State Parkway in East Farmingdale, near Broadhollow Road.

A preliminary investigation found that Edgard Platero, of Bethpage, was driving westbound in a Mercedes Benz 220 when he struck the back of a Toyota Tacoma. The impact sent the Toyota careening into the right shoulder, where it struck a tree.

The driver of the Toyota suffered broken ribs and a punctured lung, and was taken to Nassau University Medical Center for treatment, police said.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash and there were no additional reports of injuries.

Troopers determined that Platero was intoxicated at the time. He was arrested for first-degree vehicular assault with a previous conviction, operating without an interlock device, and driving while intoxicated with a previous conviction in 10 years.

He was expected to be arraigned at First District Court in Hempstead.
