Members of the Orangetown Police Department were flagged down by an East Washington Avenue resident in Pearl River, who reported to officers that she had spotted a man - later identified as 28-year-old Pearl River resident Anthony McComber - stealing the flag that was on display at a neighbor’s property just after 10:30 p.m.

Police said that officers drove a short distance on the road and spotted McComber dragging the flag and flag pole on East Washington Avenue. Officers proceeded to speak with the homeowner whose flag was stolen, and she confirmed that she did not give anyone permission to remove the flag from her home.

McComber was subsequently arrested and charged with misdemeanor counts of criminal possession of stolen property and criminal tampering. He was released and is due back in Orangetown Court on Sept. 27.
