Jumbo sponsors of the Whip, Whistle & Watch Luncheon are Aquarion Water Co., Bridgeport & Port Jefferson Steamboat Co., City of Bridgeport, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local Union 488, People's United Bank and Elizabeth M. Pfriem.
Event sponsors are Bridgeport Landing Development, Merit Insurance, Pullman & Comley, Santa Energy and Wade's Dairy Inc.
The Barnum Festival was founded in 1948 as a way to build community spirit as well as to honor the late Phineas Taylor Barnum, a Bridgeport resident who was a world-renowned showman, businessman and community leader. He founded the Ringling Bros. and Barnum and Bailey Circus.
The Barnum Festival honors Barnum with its annual celebration from mid-May to June. A Ringmaster is appointed each year to entertain the public and promote the Greater Bridgeport region.
The entertainment in the festival includes the Wing Ding Parade for Kids at Beardsley Zoo and the concluding event, a civic parade celebrating the City of Bridgeport and the surrounding area -- the Great Street Parade.
