The 27-year-old victim remained in critical condition at Hackensack University Medical Center this afternoon.

Meanwhile, Jose Wilbur Hernandez, 23, was being taken to the Bergen County Jail. He is charged with attempted murder and two illegal weapons possession counts.

Police have recovered the knife used in the stabbing at 242 West Palisade Avenue, Detective Capt. Timothy Torell told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

Hernandez surrendered to police at a bus stop a few blocks down the street after they called him on his cellphone, the captain said.

Torell praised Officers Giovanni Alise, Jose Sanchez and Leonidas Restrepo, along with EMT personnel, who he said saved the victim’s life by slowing the bleeding enough for him to make it to Englewood Medical Center’s trauma unit.

The officers immediately began administering first aid after responding to the 12:40 a.m. disturbance call, the captain said. Emergency personnel took over moments later.

“They got there just in the nick of time,” Torell told CLIFFVIEW PILOT. “The doctors who treated him said another 30 seconds or so and he wouldn’t have made it.”

However, Torell said, “he’s not out of the woods yet.”

The argument and subsequent stabbing is being treated as a domestic violence incident because the two were both living in the multi-family home, the captain said.

Englewood detectives, investigators from the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office and members of the Bergen County Sheriff’s Bureau of Criminal Identification collected evidence at the scene.
