More than a dozen students and adult volunteers got to work in the Larchmont Temple kitchen, making 400 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches that will be split between the Hope Soup Kitchen in New Rochelle and Grace Church food pantry in White Plains.
While sandwiches were being made upstairs, members of the Cards for a Cause Club were busy crafting Valentine’s Day cards that will be distributed to senior citizens at the Sarah Neuman Center in Mamaroneck.
Volunteer Pam Anselmo praised the students for sacrificing their day away from school to help out the less fortunate members of the community.
“It’s impressive that they’re giving up their time. Many of them signed up to do this as far back as December,” she said. “Most of these kids have been very fortunate. This will teach them to give back, and is a good way to begin doing community service.”
Juniors Leonie Rauls and Kaitlyn Talt, who were in charge of the group making cards for the Sarah Neuman Center, said that the residents get as much joy out of receiving visitors as they do from the cards themselves.
“When we drop off the cards, it’s nice to see their faces brighten up. A lot of these people don’t leave their room during the day, and they enjoy visitors,” Rauls said. “It’s important to do as much as possible. Something as simple as a card can really make a big difference in someone’s life.”
