SOUTHPORT, Conn. -- For Brian A. Clarke, Jr., managing broker at William Pitt Sotheby’s Southport Brokerage, helping potential homeowners find the house of their dreams is what he loves most. However, Clarke hadn't always planned on making a career out of real estate. In fact, his initial plans focused more on dogs than duplexes.

An animal lover, the lifelong Norwalk resident attended Virginia Tech as a pre-veterinary major. After graduation, Clarke decided to forgo vet school, instead accepting a job managing several veterinary practices. It was then, while looking for a condo of his own, that Clarke first considered making a career out of buying and selling homes. "The agent who helped me buy my first place said I would be great at real estate, but I thought I was too young," said Clarke. However, 13 years ago he decided to take the jump and began working in real estate full time.

"What I immediately liked was helping people find a home," said Clarke. Having lived his whole life in coastal Fairfield County, he used local knowledge and a love of the area to help match properties to the right buyers. "This area has proximity to the hustle and bustle, yet you’re far enough away to have sense of community and beaches," said Clarke. "You jump on the train and you’re in the middle of it all. It's amazing you can get the New England feel here but are so close to Manhattan."

When he's not helping lead the William Pitt Sotheby’s Southport office, Clarke can usually be found on the baseball diamond. "I play softball, coach my stepson's baseball team and am an assistant commissioner of another league," he said. His experiences on the ball field require similar attributes to managing the brokerage firm, he said. "The mentality I take in managing agents is we are a team," he said. "You can have one superstar, but it’s not going to make the team that great. You need to be surrounded by role players."
