WESTPORT, Conn. — You can say that some of the features in the Pure House in Westport are “purely” amazing.

The features at the Pure House, located at 100 Coleytown Road, run the gamut from high-tech environmental engineering to simple creature comforts.

For example, the house is heated by heat coming off the roof from the sun. This feature reduces or eliminates the need for gas or oil heat.

Doug Mcdonald, creator of the house on Coleytown Road, said another Pure House he built in Westport hasn’t required outside energy to heat the house for three years.

The bathroom contains eco-friendly features as well. The shower wall is made of porcelanosa tile, which can be crushed and recycled into new tile.

For convenience, the toilet in the master bath is built into the wall, which Mcdonald said saves space.

In the kitchen, the stove uses induction heat. Unlike most electric stoves which heat a wire and waste heat, the induction heat superheats molecules in a pan placed over the stove, saving wasted heat.

The nearby Grohe sink offers an unusual feature: One twist of the handle lets seltzer flow out of the faucet instead of regular water.

Mcdonald, who is also about to start construction on another Pure House in Burbank, Calif., for show biz personality Adam Carolla, believes that business and sustainability can go hand in hand.

He has a copy of a book by Richard Branson on a table in the sun-filled living room, one of the few pieces of furniture in the otherwise barren house in Westport.

Mcdonald said he admires Branson for his social entrepreneurship.

“I think you can do the right thing and create returns for investors,” Mcdonald said.

He estimates that his Pure Houses cost 15 percent more than a traditional luxury house to construct.

Carolla's house will be custom built. He is known for his podcast “The Adam Carolla Show,” which is the “most downloaded podcast” in the world, according to the Guinness Book of World Records.

Carolla, in addition to his show biz persona, is an expert handyman with 12 years of construction under his belt.

The project, which will begin construction in September, will be filmed for reality TV.

“It’s going to be quite a ride,” Mcdonald said in a statement. "And Adam is meant to live in (and build) a Pure House.”
