WESTPORT, Conn. -- Westport officials are reminding residents to carefully review the motor vehicle tax bills recently sent in the mail.
That is because the State Department of Motor Vehicles recently experienced major computer issues in its upgraded database which resulted in discrepancies on a number of them.
Vehicle owners receiving July 2016 motor vehicle tax bills should review them carefully to ensure the correct information is listed.
Westport residents receiving their vehicle tax bill in error from a Connecticut municipality other than Westport should contact the Assessor’s office in the municipality from which the bill was issued.
Residents should request their information be forwarded to the Westport Assessor’s office. The Assessor’s office of the other municipality may require residents to provide proof of Westport residency on or prior to Oct. 1, 2015.
Non-Westport residents receiving tax bills in error from Westport should contact the Westport Assessor’s office at (203) 341-1070.
Vehicle information will be forwarded to the non-residents' municipality. It is important to address an incorrect tax bill as soon as possible so that it can be forwarded to the correct municipality.
Paying a tax bill from the wrong municipality may result in interest due when the correct bill is paid.
The 2016 Real Estate Taxes are due on July 1 and taxpayers are reminded that full or quarterly payments may be made throughout the month of July.
Payments must be postmarked by Aug. 1 or received in the Tax Collector’s Office (110 Myrtle Avenue, Room 109) by 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 1 to avoid late payment interest penalties.
Taxpayers are urged to review the informational brochure included in each tax bill which provides answers to frequently asked questions concerning calculations and payment options.
Additional DMV information may be forthcoming. Customers with DMV questions should call (860) 263-5700 or visit the DMV website at www.ct.gov/dmv.
