Westport Selectmen Candidates To Talk Environment In Debate

WESTPORT, Conn. -- Earthplace, The Nature Discovery Center will host the 6th annual Earthplace Candidate Environmental Forum on Monday, October 21.

This year’s forum will include Helen Garten, Melissa Kane, Jim Marpe and Avi Karner, the candidates for First and Second Selectperson of Westport.

The debate, which has become an integral part of the Westport election cycle, is an opportunity for the community to engage political candidates on environmental issues. Previous debates have been between State Representatives, State Senators, US Representatives from the CT 4th district and Westport Selectmen and have provided a chance for candidates to speak directly to the public.

“The forum is an excellent opportunity for Westporters to hear the candidates speak on environmental concerns that we all share,” says Tony McDowell, the new Earthplace Executive Director. “The environmental theme and the community orientation of this event are aligned with the Earthplace mission, and we are proud to host it.”

This year’s event, which is supported in part through a grant from Connecticut Humanities, will begin at 6:30pm with a pre-forum reception with light refreshments and a chance to meet the candidates.

At this time, the general public can submit written questions for possible inclusion in the forum.

This will be in addition to questions submitted independently from the Earthplace Board of Trustees, the Westport Green Task Force, the Staples High School Advanced Placement Environmental Science class.

Questions must be environmental in nature and relevant to the scope and power of the Board of Selectman. The forum will again be moderated by Earthplace Trustee and Westport RTM member Matthew Mandell.

It will begin at 7:30pm and run approximately one and a half hours.

Earthplace is located at 10 Woodside Lane in Westport.
