Westport Seeks Justices Of The Peace

WESTPORT, Conn. – The Westport Town Clerk’s Office is accepting applications between now and Nov. 1 from unaffiliated Westport voters interested in becoming justices of the peace, Town Clerk Patricia Strauss announced Wednesday.

“To be eligible, a voter must have been an unaffiliated or a minor party member voter since May 1 of this year,” Strauss said in a statement.

Registered Democrats and Republicans must be named by their respective parties and cannot become unaffiliated to apply as an unaffiliated justice of the peace. Each party has already chosen its justices of the peace, all of whom will take office Jan. 7, 2013 for a four-year term.

Incumbent unaffiliated or minor party justices of the peace, who have already been contacted by Strauss, need to return the application form sent to them on or before Nov. 1, Strauss said. There are 19 potential incumbents.

Justices of the peace are authorized to perform weddings and to take oaths. Applications are available in the Town Clerk's Office Monday through Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. The office is in room 105 at Westport Town Hall, 110 Myrtle Ave.
