Westport Readers Sound Off On Election Day Results

WESTPORT, Conn. – Westport voters picked the winners in Tuesday’s elections, giving majorities to President Barack Obama, U.S. Senator-elect Chris Murphy and U.S. Rep. Jim Himes. That sentiment spread to the Westport Daily Voice’s Facebook page, where many readers expressed support for the Democratic candidates.

Barack Obama and Chris Murphy both won key elections Tuesday — and won support from Westport's readers.

“Linda McMahon and her disgusting barrage of TV ads and millions, deserved to lose!" reader Lesley Hodgkinson Anderson said on our announcement that Murphy had beaten Republican Linda McMahon in the race for Connecticut’s open U.S. Senate seat. Fellow reader Patty Robinson shared a similar sentiment. “So happy voters rejected McMahon and her smarmy husband Vince.”

At Tuesday’s polls, 8,341 Westport voters cast ballots for Murphy, while McMahon won 6,106 votes. But not everyone was happy to see the Democrat win.

“This state is doomed!,” reader Mary Martone Hunte said in response to the announcement about Murphy’s win.

The announcement that Obama would serve another four years in office garnered several “likes” from readers. One came from Bob Swift, who said, “We did not need another Bush-era.”

Reader Nicole Bianchi exclaimed “Proud to be an American!,” and Patty Robinson wrote, “It is a great day for women! Thanks America!”

Official poll results show the Barack Obama-Joe Biden team received 8,494 votes in Westport. Republican challenger Mitt Romney and his running mate Paul Ryan received the backing of 6,439 Westport voters.

While Obama won the majority, not everyone celebrated the news.

“A long sad four years ahead,” reader Amanda L. Brougham wrote. “I can only pray he makes better decisions with better backing in this next term. He needs to consider military service men and women, their families, the loss they've endured and the misfortune they deal with on the home front.

“His ability to make amends with his many faults will determine if he is moving America back to its status as number one country in the world!!! I admit no one president can do it all in four years, however like a parent to a child he needs to be a role model and a leader not everyone's best friend!!!!”
