Westport OKs $200,000 For Sidewalk Work Affter Grant Runs Out

WESTPORT, Conn. -- Westport's public works director took the blame for running out of grant money for downtown sidewalk construction before the project was complete because part of the money was used instead to beautify the downtown streetscape project, according to the Westport News.

The project includes sidewalks along Imperial Avenue and repair to others on Main Street.

Despite the misstep in spending of grant funds, the Board of Finance approved another $200,000 to finish the project that includes sidewalks along Imperial Avenue and repair to others on Main Street. Although no one could say why some $363,000 had been diverted from the project, Steve Edwards, director of the Public Works Department, said he was ultimately the person responsible, said the Westport News.

Part of the sidewalk money, $27,000, was earmarked for decorative lampposts, but more had to be spent on them because electrical conduits needed to be replaced, added the Westport News.
