WESTPORT, Conn. — Westport First Selectman Jim Marpe has ordered all U.S., state and Westport flags at town facilities to be flow at half-staff Friday — the 50th anniversary of President John F. Kennedy’s assassination.
“I encourage Westporters to pause for a moment of silence and reflect on the powerful impact that JFK had on our society,” said Marpe, a Republican who was sworn in to office earlier this week.
Marpe, 67, said Kennedy’s death is something he’ll never forget.
“Like so many Westporters of my age, I remember this day from 50 years ago and its impact on the nation and the world as if it were last week,” he said.
“One of my favorite quotes from JFK is: ‘Let us not seek the Republican answer or the Democratic answer, but the right answer. Let us not seek to fix the blame for the past. Let us accept our own responsibility for the future.’”
