The Democrats will appoint Chris Spaulding to take her place on the board. The Board of Selectmen will meet at 7:30 p.m. Thursday to discuss the resignation and appointment.
Weinstein, a Democrat, made her announcement in the form of an emailed statement Thursday morning.
"It has been an honor and privilege to serve as your first selectman for the past six years and serve on the board as Selectman for two years prior," she said in the statement. "By working collaboratively with various boards, commissions, committees and residents at large, we have accomplished so much.
"I am proudest of the work we have done to bring the community together, such as the creation of the Lachat Farm, the expansion of the Senior Center, the installation of lights on the baseball and football fields, a focus on renewable resources and the establishment of comfort stations during storms."
Weinstein fell short in her bid for re-election earlier this month to Republican Nina Daniel, who was sworn in to the town's top job last week.
In her statement, Weinstein thanked and praised other elected officials and town employees for their work over the years.
"I am truly touched by the number of people who have reached out to me since the election," Weinstein said. "Many of you, including a surprising number of Republicans, have asked me to stay on the board, particularly during this time of transition.
"However, after eight years of service to this town, I feel I’ve earned the right to do what’s best for me. Having worked with Chris Spaulding so closely this past year, I can attest to his intelligence capability, and sense of conviction.
"I strongly believe that he will be an outstanding replacement for me, and know that he will work collaboratively with [Selectman] Dennis Tracey to keep Weston moving in the right direction. The incoming Board of Selectmen will have to grapple with many open issues. I wish you all the best of luck and the courage to tackle the tough stuff."
