SHELTON, Conn. -- Shelton Mayor Mark Lauretti announced Monday that he will run for governor of Connecticut in 2018, according to the Fairfield Sun.

Lauretti, a Republican, has been mayor of Shelton for 26 years, and was elected to his 13th term in office in 2015. He announced his bid for governor during an interview with HAN Network on Monday morning, and said he would make a formal announcement in April, the Fairfield Sun reported.

The Shelton mayor touted policies that have improved Shelton's economy during his tenure, and said that the state needs to do more to bring companies into Connecticut, according to the Fairfield Sun.

Incumbent Gov. Dannel P. Malloy has not yet announced whether he will seek a third term as governor this year.

Other Republicans said to be exploring gubernatorial runs include Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton, state Sen. Toni Boucher of Wilton, state Rep. Tony Hwang of Fairfield and Trumbull First Selectman Tim Herbst.
