WESTON, Conn. – Weston, Easton and Redding won't be affected by state budget cuts announced last week, local officials say. But they are wary of future cuts scheduled to be announced this month.

This past Wednesday, state budget office announced $170 million in cuts that effect many state departments and individual organizations.

“No funding for municipalities was cut," said Weston First Selectman Gayle Weinstein, "but the next round of cuts may impact us. Cuts to social services will impact some of our residents.”

Peggy Sullivan, director of finance and operations for Easton, Redding and Region 9 schools, said there are $8.4 million cuts in education but none will impact area schools. She is worried that future cuts may effect excess-cost grants for special education.

Thomas Herrmann, Easton’s First Selectman, is worried the state may ultimately cut into the $600,000 the town receives annually through the Education Cost Sharing program.

“We’ll find out if they make those cuts, and hopefully they won’t,” he said.
