Petitions Still Available For Westport's Representative Town Meeting

WESTPORT, Conn. -- If you live in Westport and have a political itch that needs to be scratched, then perhaps a spot on the Representative Town Meeting is just what you're looking for.

Westport Town Clerk Patricia Strauss said Westport residents have until Sept. 10 to petition to run for a seat as a member of the Representative Town Meeting, the town’s 36-member legislative body.

Residents interested in running for the body can pick up a petition at the clerk’s office. After gathering 25 signatures of registered voters in the petitioner’s district, return the petition to the clerk by the deadline. District lists and maps will be supplied by the clerk.

So far, 15 people have shown interest in running as petitioning candidates. However, only five petitions have been returned. Twenty-nine incumbents are running for the 36 positions.

If all 15 petitions are returned, five of the nine districts will be contested -- 2, 3, 4, 8 and 9. District will have no contest, and two districts -- 1 and 6 -- will be short with one vacancy.

"I encourage everyone to consider running for the RTM," said Eileen Lavigne Flug, the body's moderator. "It's a nonpartisan group of civic-minded people making important decisions for our town. The RTM has the final vote on the town budget and appropriations over $20,000, adopts new ordinances, approves union contracts and hears appeals of certain land use decisions.."

A list of petitioning candidates and incumbents is posted outside the clerk’s office, room 105, in the Town Hall.

This year’s election is Nov. 5.
