In April, he formed an exploratory committee. On Monday, he issued a statement saying that he had made a decision.

"I am pleased to announce that I am seeking the Republican nomination for Governor of Connecticut, effective immediately."

Walker said that "it is clear to me that a significant majority of the people of Connecticut now understand that our state is in serious trouble. It is also clear that my over 40 years of successful leadership experience in all three sectors of the economy and my proven government transformation and financial restructuring experience is unique among current and potential candidates."

Walker is a CPA and strategic consultant with over 40 years of public, private and nonprofit sector experience. He is a former senior strategic adviser for the PricewaterhouseCoopers Public Sector and was the comptroller general under Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush.

"It is also clear that most people are tired of professional politicians and want a proven problem solver with significant experience with large and complex government organizations to lead a CT Turnaround Team," he said. "2018 may be our last chance to save the Constitution State from further decline."

Walker, who has lived in Black Rock for over seven years, last year drew headlines when he protested huge property tax increases in Bridgeport.

Gov. Dannel Malloy, a Democrat, announced earlier this year that he would not seek re-election to a third time.

Other Republican hopefuls include Mark D. Boughton, mayor of Danbury; Tim Herbst, Trumbull first selectman; Mark Lauretti, mayor of Shelton; Peter Lumaj, former candidate for Secretary of the State; and Dr. Prasad Srinivasan, state representative from Glastonbury. Middletown Mayor Dan Drew is a Democratic candidate.
