Comey, 55, disclosed Friday that the FBI was looking into whether a new batch of emails it discovered may be related to its previous closed investigation of Clinton’s use of a private server at her home in Chappaqua, N.Y.

A Republican, Comey was appointed director of the FBI by President Barack Obama in the summer of 2013.

The FBI is investigating whether there was any classified material in the new emails uncovered, Comey told congressional leaders. The emails in question are reportedly from a laptop belonging to Clinton aide Huma Abedin and her estranged husband, former U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner.

The FBI was in the midst of an investigation of illicit text messages that Weiner allegedly sent to a 15-year-old North Carolina girl when it reportedly made the discovery.

Comey's revelation has been called an "October Surprise" by some as Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 8, approaches.

Clinton called the revelation "troubling."

“It’s pretty strange to put something like that out with such little information right before an election,” Clinton said Saturday at a rally in Daytona Beach, Fla. “In fact, it’s not just strange; it’s unprecedented and it is deeply troubling.”

New polls have shown a double-digit lead held early last week by Clinton over Republican nominee Donald Trump have tightened considerably.

Earlier, Comey had served as deputy attorney general from December 2003 through August 2005 under President George W. Bush. He was U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York before that.

From 2005 to 2010, he worked as general counsel at Lockheed Martin Corp. In 2010, Comey became general counsel of the Westport-based Bridgewater Associates, the largest hedge fund in the world. In 2013, he left Bridgewater to become senior research scholar and Hertog Fellow on National Security at Columbia University Law School in New York before his appointment to the FBI.

A native of Yonkers, N.Y., Comey graduated from high school in Allendale, N.J.
